Years and seconds (2010)
label: BRAINSTORM RECORDS COMPANY
year: 2009
Recent BrainStorm’s album Years And Seconds holds simple but veritable message behind. As BrainStorm’s singer Renars Kaupers tells: “The only true thing we really have is time and it is up to us how we fill it up“.
It is a permanent tradition for Latvian BrainStorm firstly to release an album in their mothers‘ tongue that is followed by English version later on. Current album even goes further and in between Russian language album has been released. The decision has been made due to the success of BrainStorm’s previous work in Russia and Ukraine. Since guys of the band are fluent in Russian this move has been logical.
For recording of the album BrainStorm chosed to stay in Latvia unlike previous times when they have worked abroad. Well-known and reputed Latvian hip hop artist Gustavo took a role of a producer. BrainStorm’s Renars asked if he can call this album as the most challenging one replied: „ I am not willing to describe this album as more or less challenging comparing to others just because recording of each album is a challenge of itself. This is simply a new album of BrainStorm with interesting and unlike sound. We credit the producer Gustavo not only for the sound but also for mobilizing us and holding the whole process together. His purposefulness and persistence really mattered.“
The choice of the producer did arise contradictious opinions among fans and media in Latvia. The fear if nations loved BrainStorm will lose their distinct and familiar sound was a main concern. The album released in Latvia on 13th of May 2008 reached double Platinum (20 000 copies sold so far) and the record attendance of followed up album support tour was seen by in total 80 000 people. Additionally album received four annual „Latvian Music Awards“ trophies. It proved the new direction of BrainStorm has reached the souls of their fans. In this occasion BrainStorm likes to quote great Latvian writer Rainis: „Those who will change will be persist.“
Next chapter followed by the release of the album in Russia and CIS on 31st of March 2009. Album support tour followed and singer Renars Kaupers was named as best singer in Russia at annual „Chartavaja djudzina“ awards organised by one of the leading national radios „Nasha Radio“.
At the moment BrainStorm is in front of the next challenge to bring English version album to the audiences in Europe to conquer their souls. For a song „Count My Fingers“ featured in the album Fran Healy of the band “Travis” contributes lyrics. Fran reveals the lyrics came easy: „If the melody is strong then the lyric should come quick. I listened all the way through a couple of times and then went through it line by line so it took a couple of hours.“ Fran has known BrainStorm for a few years and after seeing them in concert at London’s Barfly club commended them by saying: „I was impressed by Renars way with the audience. The music was energetic and original. I definitely thought we had a lot in common.“
Ken Stringfellow of „The Posies“ also has written lyrics for a track "Begging For Your Starlight" while British rapper Mercury Award nominee Ty is featured on the recording.
